Is PTFE membrane hydrophobic or ;hydrophilic

Is PTFE membrane hydrophobic or hydrophilic?

I What is PTFE membrane filter?

PTFE material, hydrophobic and hydrophilic two forms of strong chemical corrosion resistance, and good heat resistance. PTFE is hydrophilic or hydrophobic compared with other filtering materials, with a larger flow rate, very low protein adsorption, and temperature resistance.

After being treated with ethanol or isopropanol, the PTFE hydrophilic membranes become PTFE hydrophobic membranes, which can be used to filter aqueous solutions. Because hydrophobic PTFE itself is hydrophobic, after modification, both aqueous and organic solutions can be filtered. The hydrophobic filter cannot be wetted naturally, and hydrophilic membranes can be wetted naturally. Suitable for filtering microorganisms, steam, and all kinds of corrosive liquid

II Main Applications Of Hydrophobic And Hydrophilic PTFE Membrane Filter

Hydrophobic PTFE membrane filter is mainly used in:

1. Air monitoring and gas filtration.
2. With strong chemical compatibility, almost competent for all organic solvents and strong corrosion chemicals filtration.
3. In the filtration of aqueous phase solution must first use ethanol or isopropyl alcohol pre-infiltration, aqueous phase solution can be filtered.
4. With its chemical stability, it can be used for liquids that cannot be filtered by other membranes and temperature conditions, and its hydrophobicity can be used for air filtration or degassing filtration.

Hydrophilic PTFE membrane filter is mainly used in:

1. Analysis of water samples to isolate RNA.
2. Clarifies filtered acid, alkali, and cryogenic liquids and dilutes protein solutions.
3. Filtration of mixtures suitable for HPLC mobile phase and other water systems and organic solvents.

III Features and advantages of PTFE hydrophilic or hydrophobic membrane filter

1. No fiber, no leachable problem
2. High durability and fast filtering speed
3. High temperature resistant and sterilizable
4. Low background value, accurate test results
5. Resistance to strong acids, strong alkalis, and corrosive solutions
6. Wide chemical compatibility, can withstand the filtration of organic solvents such as DMSO, THF, and dichloro alkanes.

Featuring light and thin texture, smooth surface, and high porosity, the PTFE filter membrane has a fast flow rate and is not easy to adsorb.
Chemical stability: It can filter all kinds of ph2-13 liquid medicines, and can also filter instrument oil, 5% acetic acid, 6n sulfuric acid, 6n potassium hydroxide, absolute ethanol, glycerol, methanol, n-propanol, guide alcohol, partial Trioctyl styrene, polyethylene glycol, various alcohols, beverages, vinegar, etc.

IV The differences between the two types of PTFE filter membrane

1. The ease of being wetted is different
Hydrophilic: easily wetted by water.
Hydrophobic: not easily wetted by water, but easily wetted by organic solvents such as alcohol and isopropanol.

2. Different use of gas and liquid filtration

Hydrophobic filter membranes are generally used for gas filtration.
Both hydrophilic and hydrophobic filter membranes can be used for liquid filtration.

Hydrophobic PTFE membrane filter

Features: good hydrophobicity, and strong temperature tolerance. The surface filter membrane is a hydrophobic filter with no support. It can be used under extreme chemical or temperature conditions (up to 260°C) that other membranes cannot withstand. Even under a very low-pressure difference, it can ensure the unhindered passage of moist air or other gases, while the aqueous solution is not permeable. The membrane is hydrophobic in nature. It has good chemical resistance, which makes it very suitable for filtering solvents or other corrosive chemicals that other membranes cannot filter.

Main uses: Hydrophobic PTFE membrane filter can be used for atmospheric filtration detection, usually only for air filtration. Uncommon hydrophobic membranes can also be used to filter certain organic solvents, such as ethanol. In actual use, liquids that can pass hydrophobic filtration can also pass hydrophilic filtration. Therefore, it is recommended to use hydrophilic filtrate. Suitable for filtering gases, including humidified air.

Hydrophilic PTFE membrane filter

Features: relatively uniform pore size, high porosity, no media shedding, thin texture, low resistance, fast filtration speed, and very little adsorption. The Hydrophilic membrane is able to filter strong corrosive chemicals in almost all organic solvents, whose performance is just the opposite of that of the hydrophilic membrane.

Main uses: filter out particles and bacteria in bacteria liquid, gas, oil, beverage, wine, etc., and can be used for particle and bacteria inspection. Hydrophilic PTFE membrane can be used to filter aqueous solutions, most organic solutions, strong acid, and alkali solutions, and can be used as experimental sewage clarification filtration, etc.
